Wednesday, June 5, 2002. 811pm. Seoul, Korea.
the united states beat portugal 3-2. apparently, the US were considered the underdogs in this group (which includes korea and poland) while portugal was the highest ranked. all the goals that were made in this match were made in a pretty spectacular manner. the first american goal was made by mcbrian off of a pass by sanneh. it was pretty cool because the pass was from pretty far away and mcbrian still managed to headbutt the ball into the goal. the third one was made by o'brian off of a corner kick. someone kicked it in, and the goalie blocked it, but someone kicked it and o'brian took advantage of the open position and kicked the ball in. but the second goal was the best. the ball was passed to donovan and he kicked the ball towards the goal, but the ball hit jorge costa's (portugal) head and went into the goal. so although donovan kicked it, the goal was credited to jorge costa because he was the last person besides the goalie to have touched it. haha.
but the goals that portugal made were pretty good, too. the first one was made by beto. he headbutt the ball only to have it pushed out by the goalie and kicked away by someone else. unfortunately, the ball was kicked back to beto who then kicked it back into the goal. the second goal was made by an american player, agoos. i don't know what he was thinking, but i'm going to assume that he was trying to kick the ball away but it ended up going in the net. sad. anyway, try to catch the highlights. but now that means the US will be playing against korea. i hope korea wins because i don't like the US coach. pretty illogical, eh? but i like gus hiddink better than bruce arena because hiddink appreciates the goals that korea makes more than arena does. at least, he's more expressive and also because arena just appears really arrogant to me. besides, korea beat the US the last time they played against each other at the world cup.
